Understanding Savings

How Is Credit Card Savings Calculated?

The calculator compares the estimated annual value of your current card with the estimated annual value of the new card.

Basic Calculation

Annual Spending

Monthly Spending × 12

Annual Rewards

Eligible Spending × Reward Rate

Net Annual Value

Rewards + Benefits − Fees − GST

Estimated Savings

New Card Net Value − Current Card Net Value

Example

Example of Credit Card Savings

Suppose your existing card generates ₹12,000 of annual rewards and benefits, while its total annual cost is ₹2,000.

Current Card

₹10,000

Estimated net annual value

New Card

₹15,000

Estimated net annual value

Estimated Savings

₹5,000

Additional annual value

Why the Difference Matters

A card with a higher reward rate is not automatically better. Annual fees, GST, reward redemption value, spending caps and benefits can materially change the final result.

Frequently Asked Questions

Credit Card Savings Calculator FAQs

Common questions about comparing credit card rewards and savings.

What does the calculator mean by savings?
Savings means the estimated increase in net annual value from the new card compared with keeping your current card. It considers rewards, additional benefits, annual fees and GST.
What if the new card has a higher annual fee?
A higher annual fee does not automatically make a card worse. If additional rewards and benefits are greater than the additional cost, the new card can still provide positive savings.
Should I include welcome benefits?
You can include welcome benefits, but only if you realistically expect to qualify for the offer and meet its spending requirements.
How should I value reward points?
Use a realistic redemption value rather than the highest advertised value. Your actual redemption choice can materially change the result.
Can this calculator compare cashback and reward cards?
Yes. Convert each reward system into an estimated monetary value and enter the appropriate effective reward rate and reward value.
Does a positive result mean I should apply?
Not necessarily. The result is an estimate. Check eligibility, card terms, reward caps, exclusions, fees and whether the card fits your actual spending habits before applying.
